Does that Annoying Squeak Mean Anything?

Whether you drive a BMW, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, Audi or Volkswagen, your vehicle will typically give you early indicators of a problem. You as the driver are in the best position to notice any subtle changes. Let’s talk for a moment about “squeaks.” A squeak is an indicator of friction.  Friction can be defined as “the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements sliding against each other.”

Although different materials will create a different pitch ranging from a groan to a harsh squeal. A softer material will often make a groaning noise whereas a hard material will make a higher pitched squeal. This is an important distinction when trying to diagnose and pinpoint the source.

Your BMW, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, Audi or Volkswagen can generate a squeaking noise from many places, including the suspension, brakes, exhaust system, engine, and plastic trim—frankly from anywhere that two materials come together. Some parts are designed as friction areas and can be serviced and/or lubricated, others parts are self lubricating, and some are not designed to have friction at all (i.e. not intended to move independently).

As a general rule of thumb, if you think it sounds bad, it probably is. When you bring your vehicle in for service, be sure to provide as much information to your German auto expert as possible. Some of the things to make note of when describing a “squeak,” “groan” or “squeal” include:

• Road conditions
• Driving speed when you hear the noise
• Were you turning or driving straight?
• Temperature and weather conditions
• Can you hear the noise inside the car or just from outside the car?
• Is the noise louder when stopping or accelerating?
• Is it most notable while the car is cold or after the car warms up?
